The Iraq Football Podcast interviewed Aimar Sher to introduce him to fans across the world. The young player currently plays for Sweden’s youth team but there have been rumours on social media stating that the player will represent Iraq. We asked Aimar ten questions – here were his answers:

1. How did your season in Holland go?

“My season started well as I was playing more minutes with every game. It became frustrating as I stopped playing soon after, which was difficult for me. When you are on loan, you need to be playing minutes, which I hoped would happen. However, that’s life as a football. It’s up to me to show the right attitude and mentality to keep going.”

2. What’s your objective for the coming season?

At my age, I need to be playing regular first team football every week – this is the most important thing to help my development and help me become a better footballer. I haven’t played regular football in a long time.

3. You started playing first team football from a young age – Talk us through that story.

I was very young when I started playing first team football but I feel that I deserved my opportunity. Nothing comes free in football and you must be prepared to earn your spot in any team – I learnt this lesson early on. Regardless of your age, the only thing managers will look at is how well you perform on the pitch. Fortunately, I was helped by having a manager who rated me and supported me in my development.

4. Can you tell us a little bit about your family background?

I was born in northern Iraq, in a small town called Shaqlawa, near Erbil. My family moved to Sweden in 2006 and we have settled here since. My family has always helped me at every stage during my career and I owe all my success to them.

5. What did you make of Hussein Ali’s decision to represent Iraq having moved from Sweden.

I was delighted for him because I really think he deserves all the best. Like myself, he is still young and will have a lot to prove in football. This will be an excellent opportunity for him to do so.

6. What have you made of the recent progress with Casas and the U20 team?

I have followed both Iraqi teams for a while now and I am extremely impressed with the direction in which Iraq are heading. There are a lot of players based in Sweden too, playing for all ages of Iraq, which makes it even more enjoyable to see. In a few years, Iraq will be a top footballing nation thanks to all the young talents being produced.

7. There have been a lot of Iraqi fans hoping you would commit to Iraq. Do you have a message for those fans?

I am extremely grateful for all the support that they offer me. Iraqi fans are amazing and I really respect them for their passion and love. I hope to one day show them the same love in return, in one way or another.

8. Has anyone from the FA or Casas contacted you about representing Iraq?

Yes. My father has previously been in touch with people from within the FA people and continues to have direct links with them.

9. What is it about Sweden that produces so many talented young Iraqi players?

In Sweden, young Iraqi players have a greater opportunity to prove themselves whilst also learning from top coaches and excellent facilities from a young age, meaning they can develop into top professionals. Most cities have excellent football pitches that can be used for free. Other countries are not lucky enough to offer youngsters the same.

10. Can you see Aimar Sher playing for Iraq one day?

To wear the Iraq shirt and represent the Iraqi people on a football pitch would be an honour and a dream. However, there are many factors that must be considered first before making such a choice. Regardless, it would be amazing to do so.
