Growing up in Sweden, I didn’t really appreciate what it meant to be Iraqi until after I was much older and I started visiting Iraq when I want to see my family in Nasriya. Despite having quite a European upbringing, my family have always encouraged me to speak Arabic at home and to understand the importance of my heritage. When I went to Iraq, I saw the hospitality and love the people have and it made me want to learn more about my country and my origins. Now that I’m older, I appreciate growing up with the best of both worlds. I’m very grateful for growing up in Sweden, but also that I have my Iraqi roots too.

From a young age, I knew I was destined to be a footballer. I didn’t have the traditional path into football because I started playing at grassroots and I have had to work my way up to the professional leagues. This is different to most players who come through the academy systems, but I feel like this has actually helped me develop as a footballer and taught me a lot about hard work.

I would describe myself as a player who likes to read the game and play a passing game. This is different to a lot of players in Sweden who like to play physical, but this has also helped me stand out. I’m traditionally a holding midfielder – a number 6 – but I can also play as a box-to-box midfielder too – more of a number 8. I’m able to keep my calm on the ball and help create chances for my team.

I’ve had a really good season with Landskrona BoIS in the Superettan, which is a huge step up to just a few years ago when I was playing in their 4^th tier of Swedish football. I have always believed in myself and my ability and I’ve continued to work hard in order to make my dreams happen as a professional footballer.

I have been watching the Iraq national team and I really feel like we can be doing much better than what we have been seeing recently. We have incredible talents all over the world and I honestly feel I can offer a lot to this team. The players just need to be calmer on the ball and trust themselves.

A lot of people contacted me a while back telling me to get my paperwork and passport ready to ensure I can play for the Iraq national team. My dad helped me with communicating with them and sorting everything out – I wanted to make sure everything is done properly, and nothing is lost in communication. Fortunately, everything was completed, and I am now ready to play for Iraq. All the paperwork is finished, I have my passport and I am ready to represent my country. I have also spoken to players like Amir Al-Ammari, who I played against earlier in the season and have been messaging each other. I am just waiting for a call-up from the national team but there has been nothing official as of yet.

I want to play for Iraq and to thank the fans for all the love they have shown me. One thing I ask from the fans is that they continue to have high aspirations for the team and hold the players to the highest standards possible. To wear the Iraq shirt is an honour, and as Iraqi players, we need to do our best in order to represent our country in the best way possible.

Regarding this upcoming season, I will need to see what happens. I have some options and hopefully once I have assessed everything, I will make a decision that will be best for me and for my career.

عندما نشأت في السويد ، لم أقدر حقًا ما يعنيه أن تكون عراقيًا  ولكن هذا تغير عندما كبرت وبدأت في زيارة العراق وبالاخص زيارة عائلتي في الناصرية. على الرغم من نشأتي في أوروبا ، لكن شجعتني عائلتي دائمًا على التحدث باللغة العربية في المنزل وفهم أهمية تراثي. عندما ذهبت إلى العراق ، رأيت كرم الضيافة والحب لدى الناس وجعلني ذلك أرغب في معرفة المزيد عن بلدي وأصلي. الآن و بعد أن كبرت ، أقدر تربيتي مع أفضل ما في العالمين. أنا فخور جدًا لأنني نشأت في السويد ، ولكن أنا فخور أيضًا لأن لدي الجذور العراقية. 

منذ سن صغير، كنت أعلم بأنني قادر على أن أكون لاعب كرة قدم. لم يكن لدي الجذور التقليدية في كرة القدم لأنني بدأت اللعب على مستوى القواعد الشعبية وكان علي أن أشق طريقي للوصول إلى الدوريات الاحترافية. هذا يختلف عن معظم اللاعبين الذين يأتون من خلال أنظمة الأكاديمية ، لكني أشعر أن هذا الأمر قد ساعدني في الواقع على التطور كلاعب كرة قدم وعلمني الكثير عن العمل الجاد.

اتصل بي الكثير من الناس منذ فترة وأخبروني أن أحضر أوراقي وجواز سفري للتأكد من استطاعتي للعب مع المنتخب العراقي. ساعدني والدي في التواصل معهم وفرز كل شيء – أردت التأكد من أن كل شيء يتم بشكل صحيح ، ولا يفقد أي شيء في الاتصال. لحسن الحظ ، تم الانتهاء من كل شيء ، وأنا الآن جاهز للعب مع المنتخب العراقي. تم الانتهاء من جميع الأعمال الورقية ، ولدي الجواز السفر العراقي وأنا على أتم استعداد لتمثيل بلدي. لقد تحدثت أيضًا إلى لاعبين مثل أمير العماري ، الذي لعبت ضده في وقت سابق من الموسم وكنا نراسل بعضنا البعض. أنا فقط في انتظار استدعاء من المنتخب الوطني لكن لم يكن هناك أي شيء رسمي حتى الآن. 

أريد أن ألعب من أجل العراق وأن أشكر الجماهير على كل الحب الذي أبدوه لي. شيء واحد أطلبه من الجماهير هو أنهم يستمرون في امتلاك تطلعات عالية للفريق وإبقاء اللاعبين على أعلى المستويات الممكنة. إن ارتداء قميص العراق شرف لنا ، كلاعبين عراقيين ، نحتاج إلى بذل قصارى جهدنا من أجل تمثيل بلدنا بأفضل طريقة ممكنة. فيما يتعلق بالموسم القادم ، سأحتاج إلى رؤية ماذا سيحدث. لدي بعض الخيارات وآمل بمجرد قيامي على كل شيء ، سأتخذ القرار الأفضل بالنسبة لي و لمسيرتي.
