It’s the hope that kills you when it comes to Iraqi football. Knowing the talents that we have at our disposal and what our players can do when they turn up simply makes it even more painful to watch us lose. It’s amazing how the smallest margins can impact on the success and likelihood of Iraq’s qualification for Qatar 2022. All we had to do was hold on for a few minutes and victory away to UAE would have left us in a good position going into the next round of fixtures. Instead, our players crumbled under the pressure, which saw us dropping points in criminal fashion against UAE, only for the match to be followed by clashes between fans and the players. The fans have turned on the players more than ever, and frustration is at an all-time high. Instead, we’re left to contemplate what could’ve been had we selected better players for our squad, given the clear lack of quality in the current team. Amir Al-Ammari’s pivotal role in the UAE match also further highlighted how talented our European-based players can be and what they’d offer to the existing squad when given an opportunity.

The retirement of Jiloan Hamad and Justin Meram really put the whole situation of the national team in perspective. Justin and Jiloan are both highly talented players with years of experience behind them. Their presence in the squad these last two games alone would’ve helped the local players cope with the pressure of needing a vital win, something that they were unable to handle. Now add to that the vast quality both players possess on and off the ball, and questions really must be asked about their exclusion. Both players used their statements when announcing their retirement to highlight the different standards expat players are held to when it comes to being selected for the squads. Justin highlighted this when he stated: “It doesn’t matter where you live or where you’re playing, you can represent Iraq, you’re Iraqi. That’s all that should matter and if you’re good enough to play then I feel in my heart, we have 15, 17, 18 players playing abroad – Iraqi players playing abroad and we never see 10 to 12 players invited. Maybe some are better than the locals, who are very good players and they are a big part of the national team but I feel we have very good players playing abroad as well. If you look at every country, look at Asia, look at the players in Japan, Korea even Iran, a lot of their players play abroad. The mentality is different, the mind is different, the level is different”. Justin added, “I would love to see 10 players from abroad with the same mentality of how they play football and ten players, technical players from the locals.”

It’s clear that the expat players are aware of the double standards they face when being selected for the national team. It’s a sad situation when two huge players like Justin and Jiloan are fed up with the way things are currently handled in the national team and that the lack of positive direction our team is heading in leaves them feeling that their only real solution is to retire. Both statements released by the players really highlighted their admiration for the fans and that both players have endured ridiculous travels and challenges to join the national team from the USA and Europe in order to wear the Iraqi shirt. This is especially the case for Justin, who has been serving the national team for seven years.

The message is always the same too, whether it’s Rebin Sulaka, Amir Al-Ammari or Zidane Iqbal. These players want nothing more than to serve Iraq and bring some happiness to our people. However, in turn, these players must be respected and supported rather than what is currently happening with our expats. To lose players of the calibre of Justin and Jiloan is heart-breaking, but their retirement brings us to a bigger problem, which is Iraq’s lost generation of expats that have been overlooked and overshadowed in recent years. Players like Ahmed Yasin, Osama Rashid, Yaser Kasim, Brwa Nouri and Frans Putros have all faced similar treatment to Jiloan and Justin over the years. All three have a few more years in them yet, but none have fully been utilised correctly with the national team. Irregular spells, limited minutes or being benched for an entire game has resulted in their best years being lost and Iraq not utilising all the potential these players could have offered Iraq. Moreover, as Amir Al-Ammari mentioned in his recent interview with us, to fully utilise the talents of these players, you would need to play them with likeminded players – players used to playing a system of European football. It’s practically impossible to fully utilise the expat players if the team structure and framework is set up incorrectly and limits them. We saw this recently when Justin came on as a substitute against Iran and was the only player trying to play the ball on the ground rather than long at every opportunity. His teammates were on a different wavelength to Justin and in turn that impacted his performance.

Iraq needs to learn from its mistakes and ensure that this lost generation of expats players was not in vain. Justin and Jiloan’s selfless statements and sacrifices can hopefully be a springboard from which it can build and develop a system to include all its expat players, similar to how countries all across the world do. Let us not repeat the same mistakes given the unbelievable talents we have across the world right now, whether its Peter Gwargis in Sweden, Aimen Sher in Italy, Cardo Siddiki in England or Ali Al-Mousawi in Denmark. Let us nurture them and make sure they feel included. Let us make them feel wanted and excited to play for Iraq – after all, they’re only here to bring smiles to the Iraqi people.

It’s disappointing to see Jiloan and Justin leave in these circumstances but both players understand the significance of their sacrifices and their dignity meant that they had to speak out. Thank you to both players for all they have done for the national team, and we pray that the situation improves in the future that you might one day reconsider returning to the national team and get a much better send-off than you deserve. Should future talents in Iraq succeed, it’s because they have stood on the shoulders of giants like you. Thank you for your efforts and sacrifices – Thank you for everything. The Iraqi fans have nothing but admiration and love for you both.

​​” جيلوان حمد وجستن ميرام والجيل الضائع! “

إنّه الأمل الذي يقتلك عندما يتعلّق الأمر بكرة القدم العراقيّة. فمعرفة المواهب الموجودة تحت تصرّفنا وما يستطيع لاعبينا تأديته في المباريات، يجعل مشاهدة الفريق يخسر أكثر إيلامًا. وإنّه لأمر مدهش كيف يمكن لأصغر التفاصيل أن تؤثّر على نجاح العراق واحتمال تأهلّها إلى دوري قطر 2022. فكلّ ما كان علينا القيام به هو الانتظار لبضع دقائق، وكان الفوز على الإمارات سيجعلنا في وضع جيّد في الجولة التالية من المباريات. إلّا أنّه على العكس، فبدلًا من ذلك، انهار لاعبونا تحت الضغط  وشهدوا خسارة النقاط على نحو إجراميّ ضدّ الإمارات، ما أدّى إلى اشتباكات بين المشجّعين واللاعبين بعد انتهاء المباراة. فقد استاء المشجّعون من اللاعبين أكثر من أيّ وقت مضى وتملّكهم إحباط عالٍ لم يشهدوه من قبل.

وبدأ التفكير حينها فيما كان يمكن أن تكون عليه النتيجة لو اخترنا لاعبين أفضل لفريقنا، بالنظر إلى النقص الواضح في الجودة ضمن الفريق الحاليّ. وقد أبرز كذلك الدور المحوريّ الذي لعبه أمير العماري في مباراة الإمارات مدى موهبة لاعبينا العراقيّين في أوروبا وما يستطيعون تقديمه عندما تُتاح لهم الفرصة.
إنّ اعتزال جيلون حمد وجستن ميرام جعل الوضع العامّ للمنتخب الوطنيّ محطّ الأنظار. فجستن وجيلوان لاعبان موهوبان للغاية وفي حوزتهما سنوات من الخبرة، وكان وجودهما في المباراتين الأخيرتين للفريق سيساعد اللاعبين المحليّين على التعامل مع الضغوط وصولًا إلى تحقيق الفوز؛ وهو الأمر الذي لم يتمكّن لاعبو الفريق التعاملَ معه. ونظرًا إلى الجودة التي يمتلكها اللاعبان المعتزلان في كرة القدم، يجب الآن طرح أسئلة جدّيّة حول استبعادهما عن اللعب. وقد استخدم كلّ من اللاعبين بياناتهما عند الإعلان عن اعتزالهما لتسليط الضوء على المعايير التي يخضع لها اللاعبون المغتربون عندما يتعلّق الأمر باختيارهم للانضمام إلى الفريق العراقيّ.

وقد أبرز جستن ذلك عندما قال: “لا يهمّ أين تعيش أو أين تلعب، فيمكنك تمثيل العراق لأنّك عراقيّ. هذا كلّ ما يجب أن يهمّ، فلدينا 15، 17، 18 لاعبًا يلعبون في الخارج وهم لاعبون عراقيّون يلعبون في الخارج ولا نرى أبدًا 10 إلى 12 لاعب منهم قد دعيوا للانضمام إلى المنتخب الوطنيّ. وربّما يكون البعض منهم أفضل من اللاعبين المحليّين، الذي هم أيضًا لاعبون جيّدون جدًّا وجزء لا يتجزّأ من المنتخب الوطنيّ، ولكنّني أشعر أنّه لدينا كذلك لاعبين جيّدين جدًّا في الخارج. وإذا نظرنا سائر الدول، انظر مثلًا إلى آسيا، انظر إلى اللاعبين في اليابان وكوريا حتّى اللاعبين في إيران، تجد الكثير منهم يلعب في الخارج. فالعقليّة مختلفة، والتفكير مختلف، والمستوى مختلف”. وأضاف جستن: “أحبّ أن أرى 10 لاعبين من الخارج بنفس العقليّة التي يلعبون بها كرة القدم في الخارج فضلًا عن 10 لاعبين من اللاعبين المحليّين.”

ومن الواضح أنّ اللاعبين المغتربين يدركون المعايير المزدوجة التي يواجهونها عند اختيارهم للمنتخب الوطنيّ.إنّه وضع محزن عندما يسئم لاعبان ضخمان مثل جستن وجيلوان من الطريقة التي يتمّ بها التعامل مع الأمور حاليًّا في المنتخب الوطنيّ، فعدم وجود اتّجاه إيجابيّ يتّجه نحوه فريقنا جعلهم يشعران بأنّ الحلّ الحقيقيّ الوحيد هو الاعتزال. وقد أبرز كلّ منهما في تصريحيهما إعجابهما بالمشجّعين وأبرزا ما تحمّلاه من رحلات وتحدّيّات صعبة من أجل ارتداء القميص العراقيّ والانضمام إلى المنتخب الوطنيّ من الولايات المتّحدة وأوروبا. وهذا هو الحال بشكل خاصّ بالنسبة لجستن، الذي خدم المنتخب الوطنيّ مدّة سبعة أعوام.

ويبقى الأمر نفسه، سواء أتعلّق بربين سولاقا، أو أمير العماري، أو زيدان إقبال. فهؤلاء اللاعبين لا يريدون شيئًا أكثر من خدمة العراق وجلب بعض السعادة لشعبنا. وينبغي احترام هؤلاء اللاعبين ودعمهم بدلًا ممّا يحدث حاليًّا. فإن فقدان لاعبين بقيمة جستن وجيلوان أمر يحطّم القلب، لكن اعتزالهما يقودنا إلى مشكلة أكبر، وهي الجيل المفقود من المغتربين العراقيّين الذي تمّ التغاضي عنه وطمسه في السنوات الأخيرة. وقد واجه لاعبون مثل أحمد ياسين، وأسامة راشد، وياسر قاسم، وبروا نوري وفرانس بطرس معاملة مماثلة كالتي واجهها جيلون وجستن على مرّ السنين. وهؤلاء الثلاثة لديهم بعد بضع سنوات أخرى للّعب مع الفريق إلّا أنّه لم يُستفَد من خبرات أيّ منهم بشكل صحيح ضمن المنتخب الوطنيّ حتّى الآن. فهم يلعبون لدقائق معدودة مع المنتخب أو يُتركون جالسين على مقاعد الاحتياط مباراة بكاملها ما أدّى إلى ضياع أفضل سنوات عطائهم وأسفر عن عدم استثمار العراق لإمكاناتهم. وقد ذكر أمير العماري في مقابلته الأخيرة معنا، أنّه للاستفادة الكاملة من مواهب هؤلاء اللاعبين، عليهم اللعب مع لاعبين يتشابهون معهم في التفكير أي مع لاعبين اعتادوا على لعب نظام كرة القدم الأوروبيّة. فمن المستحيل عمليًّا الاستفادة الكاملة من اللاعبين المغتربين إذا تمّ إعداد هيكل الفريق وإطاره بشكل يحدّ من قدراتهم.

ومن المخيّب للآمال أن نرى جيلون وجستن يغادران في هذه الظروف، لكن كلًّا منهما يفهم أهمّيّة تضحياتهما وكرامتهما تعني أنّهما اضطرّا إلى التحدّث. فشكرا للّاعبين على كلّ ما فعلاه للمنتخب الوطنيّ، ونحن نصلّي من أجل أن يتحسّن الوضع في المستقبل الذي قد يجعلهما يعيدان النظر يومًا من الأيّام في العودة إلى المنتخب الوطنيّ والحصول على فرصة أفضل بكثير. وإذا نجحت المواهب المستقبليّة في العراق، فذلك لأنّها ستقف على أكتاف عمالقة مثلكما. شكرًا لكما على جهودكما وعلى تضحياتكما. شكرًا لكما على كلّ شيء. المشجّعون العراقيّون ليس لديهم سوى الإعجاب والحبّ لكما على حدّ سواء
